Death Notice of Oren Hopkins

Oren Spence Hopkins passed away peacefully in his home on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 in his 80th year. Beloved husband of Deanna Hopkins (nee Lang). Loving father of Fred and Marian Hopkins, Cheryl and Ken Nelson, Susan Spielmacher and Shaun Stoddart, and Darryl and Kim Hopkins, all of West Grey. Proud Poppa of grand-kids Eric (Courtney), Chris (Kali), Leanne, Sarah (Tom), Nicole (Jay), Blake, Lance, Ally, Cole, Delaney, and great-grandkids Macie, Lilah, Kylar, Keilee, Lelenn, Blayden, Riley, Miller, and Hudson. Survived by siblings Mae MacLean, Isabel Edge, Noreen (Mel) Barfoot, sisters-in-Law Marlene Hopkins, and Sandra Wilhelm. Oren will be fondly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Predeceased by parents Spence and Margaret Hopkins, brothers Carman, J.D (Phyllis), Robert Hopkins, and sister Donelda (Bob) Hastie, granddaughter Lindsay Nelson, parents-in-law Fred and Mildred Lang, brothers-in-law Dan Edge, David Aljoe, Len Wilhelm and John MacLean.

Oren was born on October 9, 1938 on the Hopkins Family Farm at Mulock. At a young age the city called, where he moved in with his sister and he worked at the Woolen Mill in Cambridge. Upon marrying Deanna they took over the family farm, where they raised beef cattle, pigs, chickens and began separating cream, as well as working odd jobs like at Abitibi. After separating cream they moved towards milking cows which lead to a herd of registered Holsteins. After the barn fire of 88', a pole barn was built in its place and beef cattle were raised. His love of raising animals be it pigs, cattle, chickens, didn't matter, he enjoyed watching them grow. He loved being around his family, he always enjoyed good fun and a good laugh, listening to oldies radio and touring around the backroads in his old pick-up. Oren's journey ended as it began, back on the Hopkins Family Farm at Mulock.

Friends may call at the McCulloch-Watson Funeral Home, Durham on Friday, May 4th from 2 - 4:30 and 6:30-9 p.m. A funeral service celebrating Oren's life will be held at the Durham Community Centre on Saturday at 1 p.m. with visitation prior to the service from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Interment at Durham Cemetery.

As an expression of sympathy memorial donations to the Durham and Community Health Care Foundation, Durham Agricultural Society or the Owen Sound Regional Hospital Foundation-Oncology Unit would be appreciated by the family.
