Death Notice of Dave Hargrave

FEBRUARY 14, 1949 - APRIL 26, 2024

David James Hargrave, of Durham, was born in Guelph, Ontario on February 14th, 1949 and passed away on Friday, April 26th, 2024 at Chapman House in Owen Sound in his 76th year.  Beloved husband and best friend of Karen (McMann) for 54 years. Loving father of Lori (Scott) Kilpatrick and Ryan (Daphne) Hargrave. Cherished Poppy of Emily and Alexandra Kilpatrick. Dear brother of Barbara (Norman) Bond, Robert (Ann) Hargrave, Joyce (Paul) Dorazio, Brenda Hargrave and Wendy (Mark) Mathers. Brother-in-law of Jacqueline (Allan) Bell, Allene (Butch) Braithwaite, and Allan (Lonnie) McMann.  Loving uncle to many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Jim and Maud Hargrave, birth mother and step-father Annie and Jack Elsie, mother-in-law and father-in-law Joan and Allan McMann, and niece Sherry Lynn Bell.

Dave's 50+ year in furniture woodworking began as a production worker at Kroehler Furniture (Durham) in 1967, followed by Sklar Pepplers in Hanover as a draftsman, Kaufman Furniture in Collingwood as a Custom Sample Department Manager. He returned to Durham Furniture as a Product Development Co-ordinator for 15 years before retiring in 2016.

Dave loved spoiling his granddaughters and family pets with sweets and treats. He also enjoyed family time and would share all of his favorite books, movies and music. He was an avid sports fan and liked to watch ball, hockey, golf and racing. He was an avid reader of sports and military history books.

For many years he enjoyed playing hockey as a goalie, fastball, and fishing locally. Dave also coached Minor Hockey and Ball teams for many years.

As a teenager he was a proud member of the Grey & Simcoe Foresters as a tank driver. He held positions on the Minor Hockey Executive and was a long time member of the Durham Legion.

A private family interment of cremated remains will be held at the Durham Cemetery Columbarium.   A casual come and go celebration of Dave’s life will be held at the McCulloch-Watson Funeral Home on Friday, May 3rd from 4 – 6 p.m. Please dress casually.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Canadian Cancer Society, Chapman House (cheques payable to Grey Bruce Hospice Inc) or charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
